India 8th in World Cup Hockey

India's hockey World Cup campaign ended with a 2-4 defeat against Argentina as the hosts finished a lowly eighth in the mega-event in New Delhi on Friday.

Argentina, meanwhile, registered their second seventh place finish in the tournament since 1994 when they defeated Korea on penalty strokes.

The Argentines started their campaign here with three straight defeats but bounced back strongly with three consecutive wins, including today's victory.

The eighth place finish can be seen as a marked improvement for the Indians who were 11th in the last edition of the tournament in Monchengladbach, Germany.

India could dig out only one victory against Pakistan in their first encounter and lost four and drew one out of the six matches they played in the tournament.

Incidentally, it was against the same opponents that India lost 2-3 in the ninth-12th classification match in Monchengladbach.

World Cup Hockey : India to take on Spain today

On Thursday, India will take on Spain in a crucial Pool B encounter of the hockey World Cup in New Delhi .

After drubbing Pakistan 4-1 in their tournament opener, Australia completely outplayed India on Wednesday night.

If pace and fitness was all about Australia, world number three Spain is known for its flair and one-touch hockey and the Indian defence cannot afford to relax at any moment and repeat the mistakes they committed against Australia.

A defeat on Thursday will severely dent India's semifinal chances.

The Indian forwardline, which missed the banned Shivendra Singh, completely looked off-colour on Tuesday with Prabhjot Singh and Deepak Thakur doing very little to prove their presence in the game.

But with the two-match suspension ruling Shivendra out of the next match, the trio of Deepak, Prabhjot and captain Rajpal Singh will have to rise to the occasion and come out with more innovative ideas to beat the Spanish defence.

The Indians will also have to do away with their perennial habit of holding on to the ball for longer, a mistake which proved costly against Australia.

Australia beat India 5-2 in Hockey World Cup

India's poor record against the Australia continued. They had won only one of six World Cup encounters against the men from Down Under, drawing 1 and losing 4.

Their sole World Cup victory against the Aussies was 32 years ago, in 1978, in Buenos Aires, when they won 2-0. The last World Cup encounter between the teams in 2002 resulted in a 4-3 victory for Australia.

The hosts were down by a goal as early as the second minute when Liam De Young dispatched the ball home after it came off the crossbar.

Australia forced their first penalty-corner in the ninth minute as India got a referral wrong and Glenn Turner made no mistake with his flick to make it 2-0.

The Aussies maintained the pressure, repeatedly raiding the Indian citadel from the flanks, and struck again in the 26th minute after De Young and Robert Hammond worked their into the circle and found space for Desmond Abbot to tap the ball past Adrian D'Souza in the Indian goal. D'Souza had, a little earlier, brought off a good save.

India pulled a goal back at the stroke of half-time when Vikram Pillay trapped a long hit from the right and found the roof of the net.

But two goals within two minutes in at the start of the second session put the Aussies high in the saddle and India looked heading for a tennis scoreline defeat.

Luke Doerner made it 4-1 from a penalty-corner in the 42nd minute and Turner got his name again on the score sheet with a field goal a minute later.

Rajpal Singh reduced the margin with a field goal in the 53rd minute after being put in possession by Arjun Halappa.

Five minutes from time, the Aussies could have added to the tally but were denied by goalkeeper D'Souza who saved a penalty stroke from Jaime Dwyer. It was Dwyer's second miss from the spot in the tournament.

Real Madrid, Barcelona top sport’s finances

The Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona took first and second place in Deloitte’s annual study of the sport’s finances, with English champion Manchester United slipping a place to third because of the weakness of the British pound rather than its 716.5 million pound ($1.07 billion) debt.
Madrid generated 401.4 million euros ($567.3 million) in the 12 months ending June 30, according to the report released Tuesday by British accountancy firm Deloitte.

European champion Barcelona was ranked second in the list of 20 biggest clubs according to revenue with 365.9 million euros ($517.2 million), moving up a place to return to the position it occupied two years ago.

Although the economic downturn meant that nine clubs showed a decrease in revenue in local currency, the combined income of the top 20 clubs was up about 26 million euros ($36.7 million) from the previous year at 3.9 billion euros ($5.5 billion).

Despite a disappointing season in which it finished runner-up in Spain to Barcelona and again failed to progress beyond the second round round of the Champions League, Madrid kept first place in Deloitte’s list for a fifth straight year.

Madrid’s contract with Mediapro helped push up income from broadcast 18 percent to 160.8 million euros ($227.3 million). Manchester United generated 43.7 million euros ($61.8 million) less from broadcasting than Madrid despite receiving 18.1 million euros ($25.6 million) more from Champions League distributions.

Manchester United generated 327 million euros ($462.2 million), including 127.7 million euros ($180.5 million) in match-day revenue.

Manchester United beat Aston Villa by 2 - 1

Wayne Rooney was the Carling Cup final head boy as Manchester United came from behind to retain a knockout competition for the first time with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa.

After starting as a substitute, Rooney was only on the pitch because of an injury to Michael Owen, who had levelled James Milner's fourth-minute penalty.

He was not going to let that inconvenience stop him becoming the Wembley match-winner against Villa though and 16 minutes from time, Rooney got on the end of Antonio Valencia's cross and looped home yet another headed goal - his fifth in a row - to take his goal tally for the season to 28 and allow United to retain the trophy after a thrilling Wembley encounter Sir Alex Ferguson feared was not possible.
